Borobudur Temple is the largest Buddhist temple in the world, located in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. This magnificent monument is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's famous wonders.
History
This temple was built in the 8th century AD during the Sailendra Dynasty by King Samaratungga (842 M), which adhered to Mahayana Buddhism. It lay abandoned for centuries before being rediscovered in 1814 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles. In 1814, he commissioned an engineer named Cornelius and about 200 people to survey and clear Borobudur Temple of accumulated soil and vegetation. This effort successfully restored the grandeur of Borobudur. After the restoration was completed in 1983, Borobudur was officially designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 due to its unique Buddhist architecture, historical, artistic, and cultural value, and its extraordinary depiction of the Buddha's path to nirvana.
